Rule #1: Keep It Simple, Stupid
The KISS principle is also know by its friendlier version: "Keep it Short and Simple". In relation to good web design, here a few examples: - Have about 6 to 8 options/buttons on your main menu
When you add more options, they will be unable to navigate. The will have forgotten the first option by the time they reached the last option.
- Keep your pages short
When a visitor comes to your site and has to scroll to the bottom of the page to read the information he is looking for, there is a big chance your visitor already gone. Use more pages to explain the tell your story or use a larger font to split the page up in sections. - Use a standard design
Your main navigation should always be on the top of the screen or on the left. Just like this design and many others out there. Don't change the layout of your pages when a visitor clicks to the next page.
- And lead us not into temptation
Don't distract your visitors with information that might lead them to another website. If you want to sell your visitors something, make the path short and narrow.
